Movie Review ; The Book of Eli

The movie Book of Eli, released on 11th January 2010, is centered around the main character Eli responding to the voice of God, which instructs him to take the last Bible west, and he obeys God by doing as instructed. As he journeys on, he meets Solara, who becomes our lead actress and at last partners with our hero. In the movie, the antagonists are Carnegie, who opposes our hero Eli by forcefully taking the Bible from him. The directors of this movie are the Hughes brothers, Albert and Allen Hughes. These directors also directed the film American Pimp which was released in 1999.

Eli, the blind character in the movie, is given a role to protect a sacred book that contains the secrets to saving humankind through which he ends up fighting alone on his way to across America to secure the Book of Eli. Eli is forced to wander across North America in a period of 30 years, and he must as well fight all sorts of danger for the sake of the Book of Eli's safety. Although he dies, leaving a machete and other possessions that Solara Inherits them, he accomplishes his goal and recites the entire book before his death. The printing produces copies of the Bible, and Lombardi places one on a bookshelf between Tanakh and the Quran. The use of the blind character in the movie was not realistic as Eli, who is Denzel Washington is not blind in real life. The blind character was used to make the movie dramatic; for instance, when Eli informs the guards, he has a copy of the Bible, he is taken inside, and when it is revealed that he is blind, he dictates the New King James Version of the Bible from memory to Lombardi, the sanctuary leader.

It is until when the movie is about to end when we realize that Eli was blind before the war, and that is through being a soldier that he learned his skills in fighting. After finding the Bible and hearing the voice of God is when he regained his sight. This portrayed God's power that directed him throughout his given task to make sure the Bible lands in safe hands. This explains why he does unusual things a common blind man cannot do. In the movie, his perfect fighting skills are seen when he shoots down a vulture flying overhead, yet he was blind.

Conclusively, I believe that whoever watches the movie will change his/her perception towards blind people. The film depicts that a blind person can do what any other normal person can do. Eli is seen in the movie doing what seems to be impossible to ordinary blind people because God's power was working on him, directing him, and gave back his eyesight when he was tasked to make sure he delivers the Bible to the right hands. Throughout the movie, we could not realize that he was not blind until when at the end of the movie when he recites the Bible to the sanctuary leader. It is because of the way he was fighting, displaying his skills like an expert that no blind man can do. However, it is the faith and the obedience he had to God that returned his eyesight. Thus, after watching the movie, most people would believe that God can return your eyesight as long as you trust in him and obey his commands.
