Caribbean Governments should do more to Promote SDGs 1 and 2

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) offer a platform for advancing the achievements with the millennium development goals (MDGs) while making development broader in scope than it was under the MDGs. While moving from eight goals and 22 targets under the MDGs, countries and the world as a whole are now pursuing an ambitious agenda for sustainable development with 17 goals and 169 targets. As a result, the 2030 Agenda for SDGs has given yet another chance for the Caribbean to further its sustainable development vision.

Most Caribbean nations face considerable challenges while trying to achieve SDGs 1 and 2. This is because such nations are usually poor, and so, they face a huge challenge while trying to achieve SDGs 1 and 2, whose main goals are to eradicate poverty and hunger.  Caribbean nations face challenges such as poverty, poor infrastructure, political instability, poor technology, and lack of resources.

The biggest obstacle facing Caribbean countries is poverty; however, progress has been made in reducing the global number of the poor. Consequently, most countries have now renewed their commitment to fighting against poverty and hunger after the adoption of the Agenda 2030. Being part of the Agenda 2030 mandate, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supports countries to reduce rural poverty by making sure that processes of structural and rural transformation are pro-poor and inclusive (Magalhães, 2020).

In conclusion, to help Caribbean countries in their efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, FAO’s multi-sectoral approach should aim to address the social, economic, and daily challenges people from these countries face. These countries should increase access to natural resources and other useful assets for the poor, initiating decent employment in agriculture, and empowering poor individuals to benefit from the development process.
