A Small Twist of Fate

Li! Li! Wake up, it’s me. With a start, I get woken up in the middle of the night by my father, Wong, who has custom of checking on me. I slowly open my eyes and raise my head only to meet with father’s eyes. I blinked several times, trying to adjust my eyes to the darkness of the room. The only source of light came from the faint moonlight seeping through the window.

I sleepily turned towards the sound of my father's voice, feeling a surge of relief wash over me as I saw his shadow standing by my bedside. "Father," I mumbled, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "What's the matter?"

Dad's figure approached me; his eyes filled with concern. "Are you alright, Li? The storm seems to be getting worse."

I nodded, sitting up slowly. "I'm fine, Dad. Just startled by the noise outside."

The howling wind outside rattled the windows, sending shivers down my spine. It wasn't unusual for storms to rage through the mountains of Tojira, but tonight felt different. There was an ominous air lingering in the darkness, a feeling of unease that permeated the very walls of our home.

He sighed, running a hand through his raven-black hair. "I know, Li. It's been a restless night for all of us. But I couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to check on you."

I smiled weakly, touched by my father's concern. Despite the dangers lurking outside, he always made sure to look out for me and my siblings. It was a comfort knowing that he was there to protect us, even in the darkest of times.

As I swung my legs over the side of the bed, a sudden noise echoed through the house, causing both of us to freeze in place. My heart skipped a beat as I strained my ears, trying to determine the source of the sound."

What was that?" I whispered; my voice barely audible over the howling wind.

My father’s expression darkened, his grip tightening on the hilt of his sword. "I'm not sure, but we should investigate. Stay close to me, Li."

With cautious steps, we made our way through the dimly lit hallway, the floorboards creaking beneath our feet. Every sound seemed magnified in the silence of the night, sending chills down my spine.

As we reached the top of the staircase, another noise echoed from below, this time louder and more distinct. It sounded like... chanting?

My father's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing in determination. Without a word, he motioned for me to stay behind him as he descended the stairs, his sword at the ready.

I followed closely behind, my heart pounding in my chest. With each step, the chanting grew louder, filling the air with an eerie melody that sent shivers down my spine.

As we reached the bottom of the staircase, the source of the chanting came into view. A group of shadowy figures stood in the center of the room, their faces hidden beneath dark cloaks.

My father’s grip tightened on his sword, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Who goes there?" he demanded, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.

The figures turned towards us, their eyes glinting in the dim light. Without a word, they raised their hands, a dark energy crackling around their fingertips.

Before I could react, my father leaped into action, his sword flashing in the darkness as he charged towards the intruders. I watched in awe as he fought with the skill and precision of a seasoned warrior, his movements fluid and graceful despite the chaos unfolding around us.

But the intruders were relentless, their dark magic overpowering even my father's formidable strength. With a sudden burst of energy, they unleashed a powerful blast of energy, sending my father crashing to the ground.

I gasped in horror as I rushed to his side, my hands trembling as I tried to staunch the flow of blood from his wound. "Father," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "Please, stay with me."

But it was too late. With a final, ragged breath, father's eyes fluttered closed, his life slipping away before my very eyes.

And as I knelt there in the darkness, embracing my father's lifeless body in my arms, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again.
