George Washington was inaugurated into office on April 30, 1789, becoming the first U.S president, and John Adams was the vice president. Three departments had been created under the Article of confederation which included the ministry of foreign affairs, the finance office, and the department of war. Washington chose a cabinet to help him in his term of presidency. He chose Thomas Jefferson as secretary of state, head of the department of war, Henry Knox, Edmund Randolph as first Attorney general, and Alexander Hamilton as secretary of the treasury. He supported Hamilton’s economic policy as a way for how the government to collect revenue and pay its debt.
