The role of Physiotherapy in enhancing functional recovery and quality of life among survivors of crisis or conflict is an important area of study especially in crisis and conflict settings. In relevance to the existing aspects to explore specific to the LEAP Program, I will identify how physiotherapy can contribute to enhancing functional recovery and improving quality of life for survivors of crisis or conflict. This would be shown through a comparison of these interventions during acute crisis phases versus in post-crisis recovery periods.

Background and Significance

Crises and conflicts always results to devastating physical and psychological injuries that adversely affect functional abilities and welfare of the person concerned. In this regard, comprehensive rehabilitation intervention inclusive of physiotherapy remains pivotal. Physiotherapy is instrumental in regaining movement, reducing pain, and preventing long-term disabilities. This is an important area of concern; however, though little has been done on the integration and effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention in a humanitarian setting, with specific comparison between acute interventions during crisis and those during post-crisis recovery phases.

Objective

The focuses on how physiotherapy could optimized to maximize functional recovery and quality of life across a range of crisis response phases. I intend to explore whether early intervention during the acute phase of a crisis has any superior outcomes compared to those introduced during the recovery phase. Several questions also arise on the nature of challenges and barriers physiotherapists face in such settings and the kind of strategies to be used to enable them to practice effectively.

Research Questions

  • How does the timing of physiotherapy interventions; acute phase versus post or crisis recovery phase affect the functional recovery and quality of life of survivors?
  • What are the specific challenges and barriers of physiotherapy practice in crisis and post-crisis settings, and how can they be mitigated?
  • What are some of the most successful physiotherapy techniques and methods that might be applied to some of the common injuries experienced by survivors of disasters and armed conflicts and other crises?
  • How can interdisciplinary collaboration enhance the delivery and impact of physiotherapy in these settings?

 Methodology

To tackle this topic a mixed methods approach of quantitative and qualitative research will be employed. The quantitative aspect would involve making a comparison of the proposals of functional recovery and quality of life measures across survivors who experienced physiotherapy during the acute crisis stage, against those who had such physiotherapy in the post-crisis recovery phase. The data could be collected from humanitarian organizations, as well as healthcare providers working in conflict zones and areas affected by crisis situations. This would progress into down-the-line interviews with physiotherapists, healthcare professionals, and survivors to understand their experiences and challenges in the perceived effectiveness of the physiotherapy interventions. This approach would provide a holistic understanding of the contribution of physiotherapy to these disturbed environments.

  Relevance to LEAP Program

The relevance of the topic to the realization of leadership potential through critical reflection in academics and deepening insights into humanitarian practice is very valid. In the process, I expect this research to assist in the development of more effective and evidence-based physiotherapy interventions relevant for crisis and post-crisis situations. This research has the potential to inform policy and practice and improve the lives of individuals affected by crises and conflicts. The role of physiotherapy in crisis and conflict settings remains critical yet under-explored areas. Therefore exploring this subject should help me within the LEAP program to bridge theory with practice into contributing to the development of more effective rehabilitation strategies that enhances recovery and quality of life for survivors.
